Activity Description

In this activity, students are given a task to measure the length and width of each room in a given floor plan. The task is as part of the job application they filled for the "Precision Painting Job". In the floor plan, they have different types of rooms such as Living, Hallway, Kitchen, Bath etc.., they need to analyze the floor plan, use the grid system, and given grid labels to find the width and length. Students are given immediate feedback of if they are correct or not using automatically checked checkboxes.

The activity helps students to understand the role of measurement in real-life situations.

Learning Objective

The objective of the activity is to develop an understanding of the meaning and processes of measurement.

Teacher Tips

Included with the activity, you can view the tips to clarify student's doubts or to evaluate answers (for a teacher scored worksheet).
Common Core Math -
Measurement & Data
Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. *For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), ...*
Common Core Math -
Geometry
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
